What is tier 4?

Tier 4 refers to a level of restrictions or measures put in place to control the spread of COVID-19 or other infectious diseases. It is typically the highest level of restrictions, indicating that the virus is widespread and posing a significant risk to public health.

In the UK, Tier 4 was implemented in December 2020 as a result of a new variant of the coronavirus that was believed to be more transmissible. Tier 4 restrictions included the closure of non-essential shops, gyms, and leisure facilities, as well as a ban on mixing with other households over Christmas. Similar tiers have been implemented in other countries, including Australia and Canada.

Tier 4 can also refer to the visa category in the UK immigration system. This tier is for students who wish to study in the UK for more than six months, as well as for other individuals who are coming to the UK for work or other reasons, such as religious workers or charity workers. Tier 4 visa applicants are subject to specific eligibility requirements and must provide evidence of financial support and English language proficiency.
